The Local Area

Finniss is about 55 km south-east of Adelaide, bordered by Ashbourne, Sandergrove, Nurragi, Milang, Currency Creek, Clayton Bay, Tooperang and Mount Observation. The town was surveyed in 1867 as Queen's Own Town, after the Queen's Own Regiment of Foot, while the railway was being extended from Goolwa to Strathalbyn. It formally took the name Finniss in 1940, after the railway station that honoured Boyle Travers Finniss, the first Premier of South Australia.

Site & Climate

Finniss is a small rural locality on the Victor Harbor railway line, just north-east of where the line crosses the Finniss River, about 13 kilometres north of Goolwa. It sits inland and low lying, away from the coast, with relatively modest rainfall. Rural blocks here commonly have open outlooks with little shelter, so pergolas and covered decks are often planned for summer shade as much as for looks.

Council Approval

Shade structures for an open rural block at Finniss, such as a pergola or covered deck, are assessed under South Australia's Planning and Design Code, as are verandahs. Many require development approval, while smaller low set ones can be exempt. The local planning authority is Alexandrina Council, and applications are made through the state PlanSA system. Talk to us and we will help you figure out what your shade project needs.

This is a general guide only. Requirements depend on your specific structure and site, and we are happy to help you confirm what is needed.
