Lakeside town on Lake Albert, open and wind exposed by the water

The Local Area

Meningie is a town on the south-east shore of Lake Albert, on the Princes Highway about 49 km south of Tailem Bend, and the closest town to Coorong National Park. It adjoins Waltowa, Meningie East, Field, Coorong, Lake Albert and Meningie West. Surveyed in 1866, it had a jetty from 1867, and paddle steamers ran between Meningie and other ports on Lake Albert and Lake Alexandrina until about 1928. The name is said to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning place of mud.

Site & Climate

Meningie sits on the shore of Lake Albert, a lakeside town and a gateway to the Coorong. It is an open, flat setting where wind comes steadily off the lake, with warm dry summers and salt influence from the nearby Coorong waters. Decks and pergolas here are commonly built with durable decking and corrosion resistant fixings, and lakeside blocks call for solid wind bracing and considered footing detail.

Council Approval

A lakeside deck or pergola facing Lake Albert in Meningie is assessed under South Australia's Planning and Design Code. Development approval is commonly needed, though smaller low set structures can be exempt. The Coorong District Council is the local planning authority, and applications are lodged through PlanSA, the state system. We are always glad to talk through what a project like yours is likely to require.

This is a general guide only. Requirements depend on your specific structure and site, and we are happy to help you confirm what is needed.
