The Local Area

Myponga is a small town on Main South Road, about 60 km south of Adelaide and roughly 15 km north-east of Yankalilla by road. Its neighbouring localities include Sellicks Hill, Pages Flat, Mount Compass, Hindmarsh Tiers, Inman Valley, Wattle Flat and Myponga Beach. The Myponga River was dammed in 1962 to form Myponga Reservoir, part of Adelaide's water supply, and Myponga Conservation Park lies about 5 km south-south-west of the town, with the Heysen Trail passing through it.

Site & Climate

Myponga sits inland among the rolling hills of the western Fleurieu, near the Myponga Reservoir. It is more sheltered from direct salt exposure than the coastal towns, with a cooler and wetter hills climate. Sloping rural blocks are common, which often suits raised decks and pergolas designed to work with the contour of the land.

Council Approval

A raised deck that steps down a sloping Myponga hill block, or a pergola built off the back of a farmhouse, is generally assessed under South Australia's Planning and Design Code. A large share of these structures need development approval, though some smaller low set ones are exempt. The District Council of Yankalilla is the local planning authority and applications go in through the state PlanSA system. Give us a call and we will help you understand what your build involves.
