The Local Area

Inman Valley is a rural locality roughly 15 km north-west of Victor Harbor, on the upper reaches of the Inman River. The valley and river are named after Inspector Henry Inman, first commander of the South Australia Police, who pursued two allegedly escaped convicts there in 1838. Surveyors pegged out a dray road from Rapid Bay to Encounter Bay in 1839, now Inman Valley Road, and Selwyn Rock, a glaciated pavement in the river bed first described in 1859, lies in the valley.

Site & Climate

Inman Valley follows the Inman River through rolling farmland between Victor Harbor and the Yankalilla district. It is a sheltered inland valley, greener and cooler than the coast and largely set back from salt exposure, though open blocks still catch the breeze. Decks and pergolas here are commonly built with durable timber, and the contoured valley blocks often suit a raised deck that makes the most of the rural outlook.

Council Approval

Inman Valley is split between the City of Victor Harbor and the District Council of Yankalilla, so which council assesses a raised deck on a contoured valley block depends on where that block sits. Either council applies South Australia's Planning and Design Code to decks, verandahs and pergolas: many need development approval, while smaller low set ones can be exempt. Applications go through the state PlanSA system, and we can help confirm the council and what your project needs.

This is a general guide only. Requirements depend on your specific structure and site, and we are happy to help you confirm what is needed.
