Encounter Bay coastal pocket near The Bluff, steady salt and wind

The Local Area

Yilki is a long established name for part of the Encounter Bay shore within present day Victor Harbor, and is Aboriginal in origin, recorded as meaning a place by the sea. European settlement came early: Congregational minister Ridgway William Newland settled at Yilki in 1839, and the Tabernacle church he founded there was completed in 1846, with a cemetery beside it. The Jefferis Memorial Church at Yilki opened in December 1919.

Site & Climate

Yilki sits on the Encounter Bay coast between Victor Harbor town and The Bluff, a settled coastal pocket facing the bay. Like the rest of Encounter Bay it sees steady salt laden wind and strong summer sun, so decking timber selection, coatings and corrosion resistant fixings all matter here. Many of the older blocks have tight access, which is worth planning for on a deck or pergola build.

Council Approval

A deck or pergola facing the bay at Yilki is assessed the same way as anywhere else in the state, under South Australia's Planning and Design Code. Many need development approval, and smaller low set ones can be exempt. The City of Victor Harbor is the local planning authority, and applications are lodged via the state PlanSA system. We can help you work out what your build needs before you start.
